EUDAMED: “no longer on the market”

EUDAMED status is on the market, no longer on the market, or not intended for the EU. A change is a new UDI-DI version, not a silent edit.

The phrase people type is some variant of no longer on the market or no longer placed on the EU market. In EUDAMED those are the same idea. The public device status on a UDI-DI is one of:

  • On the market (the register’s longer form is “on the EU market”).
  • No longer on the market (“no longer placed on the EU market”).
  • Not intended for the EU market, which is an initial status. The Commission’s business rules do not let a manufacturer switch an existing device to that status later. An update from “on the market” goes to “no longer placed”, not backwards into “not intended”.

UdiWatch prints the shorter forms, because that is how the status code reads once the reference-data prefix is stripped. The underlying code is still the Commission’s, for example refdata.device-model-status.on-the-market.

What the status does not mean

It is not a recall notice, a field safety corrective action, or a certificate withdrawal. Those are other modules. A device can remain “on the market” in the UDI record while a certificate linked through the basic UDI-DI is close to expiry, and the reverse is also possible. If your process treats “status” as a single bit that covers safety, stock, and certification, the register will not cooperate.

Setting a device to no longer placed on the EU market also pulls its container packages to the same status, according to the UDI business rules. You will not see a separate public alert for each carton level unless you are watching those package UDI-DIs yourself.

How a change appears

The manufacturer submits a new version of the UDI-DI. The public record then shows a new status and, when it is filled in, a status date. A useful watch compares the previous snapshot with the next one and keeps both values. A tool that only stores “whatever the API said today” cannot tell you what it said last month, and cannot show an auditor the field that moved.

The first time you add a UDI-DI, the current status is the baseline. You should not get an email that says the device “changed” to the state it already had. Later, a move from on the market to no longer on the market is the event. A failed read is not an event. If EUDAMED times out, the old snapshot stays and the watch records the error instead of inventing a status.
